Chapter 7

Jon was an idiot. Or in Matt’s words, he was a dumb fuck. Jon couldn’t disagree. He groaned and massaged the bruise that was forming on his cheek where Eve slapped him.

Matt was alternating between laughing at him and staring at him.

“If you have something to say, then say it,” Jon spat. They were standing at the parking lot next to Matt’s car. Eve was gone. She’d stomped off after slapping him, and he hadn’t been able to stop her.

“Well of course, I have something to say. I’m trying to figure out the most insulting way to word it,” Matt said. He chuckled again, sighing loudly, as he wiped a tear from his eye.

“You’re so stupid it’s almost hard to believe,” Matt commented. His voice was so serious that Jon felt himself scowl.

“I get it, okay? I did something stupid—” Matt barked a laugh interrupting him.

“Oh, this was more than just stupid.”

Jon wasn’t sure if he was annoyed because of Matt’s constant jabs, or if he was annoyed because he couldn’t deny anything Matt was saying.

What he did was probably the dumbest, most embarrassing thing he’d done in his life, and not only had he embarrassed himself, but he’d embarrassed Eve as well. Matt was shameless, so of course, he hadn’t been the least bit embarrassed. Jon could swear he saw him chuckle when they walked out of the restaurant. He sighed and ran a hand over his face. What was he even doing? He was doing things that were unlike him; storming into a restaurant to take her back? She was never his to begin with.

He wasn’t an impulsive man, but it seemed like things were different when it came to her. He still didn’t really know what he was doing, but the thought of her being with Matt, the thought of them actually hitting it off and starting a relationship made him so anxious. He'd held on to the words Matt had jokingly challenged him with and ended up messing things up more. He buried his head in his hands as Matt continued talking.

“How the hell do you plan on apologizing to her? What could you do to atone for this anyway? She might not even want to speak to you,” Matt said. That was true. If she didn’t talk to him then how would he even apologize? He shook away the assumptions and glared at Matt.

“Hey, don’t look at me like that. You were the one who barged into a restaurant, not me.”

“You told me to come and get her,” he grumbled, knowing it was a pathetic excuse.

“I didn’t mean it literally, you dolt. What were you even thinking?”

“I was thinking that I wouldn’t be able to stand it if she ended up getting close to you,” he answered honestly. Watching her getting closer to Matt would be a nightmare for him. He selfishly wanted to know more about her. More than anyone else knew. He wanted sides of her that she’d only show to him.

Jon had never fallen in love before.
